We launched the new Climate–Decent Work Risk Assessment visualisation last week, at the International Seminar on Human Trafficking: empirical evidence, measurement, and new theoretical debates.

What it does: climate hazard and working conditions on the same map of Brazil, at 5 km. Every cell carries a climate hazard score, a decent work score, and crop exposure for 117 crops from CROPGRIDS, combined following the IPCC’s Risk = Hazard × Exposure × Vulnerability framing across all 5,570 municipalities. You zoom in and the hexagons get finer. You drag the lens and it tells you what is underneath it.

On the build. The backend is all R, which surprises people. DuckDB bins the 5 km grid into H3 hexagons at three resolutions, freestiler serves the PMTiles, mapgl draws them inside Shiny. I went in expecting to fall back to a JS framework at some point and never did. freestiler and mapgl are genuinely excellent, and the fact that I could stay in one language for the whole pipeline is most of why this shipped at all. The one piece of JavaScript is the VizQuill lens. It runs as a Docker Space on Hugging Face. Claude Code did a lot of the plumbing with me.

The visualisation allows you to combine each element of decent work as well as climate hazards to answer your own questions.

Every 5 km cell carries a climate hazard score (23 indicators in 9 groups — heat, UV, drought, flood, wildfire, air pollution, vector-borne disease, agrochemicals, WASH), a decent work score (35 indicators across the ILO’s 10 decent work elements), and crop exposure for 117 crops from CROPGRIDS. The three combine following the IPCC’s Risk = Hazard × Exposure × Vulnerability framework, covering all 5,570 municipalities.
